    Release by way of Marriage Settlement Parties: (i) John Atkinson of Potton, gentleman; (ii) Henry Lambe of Newton Bromswold [Northamptonshire], gentleman; (iii) William Lambe of Farndish, gentleman and Matthew Wild of Yelden, gentleman Reciting: - intended marriage between (i) and Mary Lambe, daughter of (ii) Operative Part: - (ii) paid 800 to (i) for (a)-(i) as a jointure for Mary Lambe if she survived (i) and in lieu of dower and (i) released to (iii) Property: (a) closes of pasture in Potton called Dolmans and Little Dolmans, late in possession of dissolved Priory of St.John Baptist & St.John Evangelist, Cauldwell, Bedford; (b) meadow ground in Potton late of Cauldwell Priory, except 1a 1.5r 0p in Holme Meadow formerly in close of William Chambers of Potton, tanner; (c) mansion house in Rose Alley, Potton bounded: N by lands formerly of Edward Godfrey; S on common way leading to brook; (d) close of pasture adjoining backside of (c) near the brook or river; (e) Tharkers Close, adjoining backside of (c) with tenement, barn and dovehouse standing on it, built with orchard at lower end of Tharkers lying next to common lane leading to brook, part lying by side of brook, formerly in occupation of Henry Godfrey, gentleman [see also X284/17/2 for 16th century ownership of Tharkers]; (f) tenements on other side of common land from (e) lying next the orchard formerly in occupation of Thomas Plomer; (g) 10 acres of meadow lying on south side of brook, one acre being fenced about and known as Sheild Acre, the other nine acres being dispersed in common fields; (h) 70 acres dispersed in common fields; (i) former estate of Edward Godfrey in Potton and Sutton, bought from him by Ann Britton with all houses, outhouses, edifices, buildings, barns, stables, yards, orchards, gardens, backsides, maltings, kilns, dovehouses, hedges, ditches, mounds, fences, walls, ways etc. Habendum: - to (iii) to use of (i) for 99 years or until his death; to (iii) during life of (i) in trust for (i); to use of Mary Lambe/Atkinson during her natural life after death of (i); to use of edest son of (i) and Mary Lambe/Atkinson etc. (a)-(h) being in occupation of (i) Covenant: - part of John Atkinson's lands were copyhold from manor of Potton Much Manured and custom of manor dictated that if a man died his wife gained possession of such lands if no surrender had been made despite any settlement; as it was not intended that Mary Lambe/Atkinson was to have these lands (ii) covenanted that within six months of the marriage Mary Atkinson would join (i) in surrendering the lands to uses (i) intended Witnesses: - John Underwood; - Jonathan Nicholls; - R.Willis
