From: Samuel Whitbread I To: Thomas Strong I mean the Elevation of St.Paul's, Bedford as he did the Elevation of Cardington. I beg you will ask Skinner for a friend the Price of this if to be sold by private Contract, as my Bailiff is going to Kent & shall see it, but they often advertize by Autumn & sell privately so that a man's time & expence is lost, as in Sir John Leeds Estate lately - send me an answer tonight, if you can on to Cardington tomorrow by machine in the morning. I thank God I am full well. Postscript: Mr.Barnes sends you his Compliments. Send the advert back. Note on Dorse: 60 is gone to Cambridge with Commision to 100 so doe as you please, here is 40 - the son ought to know. I shall heare from cambridge my friend tomorrow. I find they mean to keep him in debt there. [Note: J.Carter made a watercolour plan and elevation of Cardington church in 1783 [BLARS ref. W2/3] and a note on an index card reads "slide 8743 - view of south side of St.Paul's, Bedford, drawn by Carter for Mr.Whitbread c.1780 - original in British Library, Add Ms 29943f.17. Skinner was a partner in Skinner & Dyke of 87 Aldersgate Street, London, auctioneers]
