    A pedigree of the Small family of Bedford for the period c1760-1880 was compiled by Miss P Bell (Searchroom CRT 190/932). Bertie James Small was born on 14 April 1890 at 53 Wellington Street, Bedford, son of James Small, journeyman carpenter, and Charlotte, nee Staines. He was married at St Anne's, Wandsworth on 8 September 1912, to Eva Lauren Elizabeth Watson, aged 30, spinster of 1, Victoria Terrace. Bertie Small's profession was given as cricket bat maker. (He worked at the MCC Cricket Bat Works in Tavistock Street, Bedford.) His father James was a carpenter, while his bride's father, James Watson was a tailor. Bertie James Small died of bronchitis on 26 June 1959, aged 69, at Edgbury Hospital, Aspley Heath. His occupation was tennis racquet maker.
