  • Title
Sales daybooks of E.D. Fisher & Sons, ironmonger, 57 High Street, Sandy. The source of the material was identified only by cross-referencing two entries in the daybooks to Tempsford Parish Council with lists of cheques drawn in the parish council minutes. All daybook entries are in a standard format comprising a number (presumed to be the invoice number, though this cannot be substantiated), the name and sometimes the address of the customer and a description of the goods sold. Prices are itemised and totalled. E.D. Fisher & Sons were ironmongers, builders, hardware and iron merchants and agricultural implement agents, thus the range of goods sold is correspondingly large including scythe blades, fencing, pigs' troughs, honey pots, bricks, paraffin, toilet rolls and glass. Customers include former Rural and Urban District Councils, Beds. and Hunts. County Councils, large estates, solicitors, building firms, garages, other retailers, Parochial Church Councils and private individuals. The firm closed on the outbreak of war in 1939 and reopened in 1946 as H. Gilby ironmongers. For details of post-1939 history and later records see catalogue Z 769. The main branch of E.D. Fisher & Sons was in the Market Square at St. Neots (Cambs.) and 34 volumes relating to this branch, forming part of the consignment received from Longsands Museum have been forwarded to Cambridgeshire County Record Office (Grammar School Walk, Huntingdon, PE18 6LF). A further branch was at Market Square, Biggleswade and material relating to this branch is catalogued as X 154 box 4.
