MOGERHANGER PARK Photographs of Humphrey Repton's Red Book for "Mogenhanger in Bedfordshire, a Seat of Godfrey Thornton Esqr.", made between 28th May and August 1792. Photographs made c.1986 by National Monuments Record, negative numbers BB 86/26. Page .20 View from the Drawing room continued Reads - The preceeding drawing shews the effect of the management I propose. Immediately in front of the door is an avenue, from which a few trees might perhaps be taken away to advantage, but as their total removal would only shew so much more of the farm buildings, I think it will be advisable to hide the stems of the trees by the same plantation of flowering shrubs, which serves to conceal the return road for Coaches, and part of the fence. From hence also may be a convenient path leading to the farm house under the shade of these trees, as shewn in the map at C, the effect of this shrubbery will appear by removing the slide No.III. On the other side of the drawing, is the present and proposed state of the view in the direction of the approach; when I come to speak of this, I trust there will be no doubt of the necessity for removing the two stagnated pools of muddy water. In the view from the drawing room one of these is immediately under the eye, and at so little distance that it is hardly possible for a coach, with a set of horses, to go from the door without driving the leaders into the water: a high bank lies on the side of the pool ready to be tumbled into it, and on this bank are some bushy elms which hide the two finest trees in the park, beneath whose springing branches the distant view will be let in as I have shewn by removing the slide No.IV. 23 Reproduction Conditions - Copyright in the following prints is vested in Sothebys
