"Sir, The following pages will I hope sufficiently explain my opinion with respect to the improvement of Mogenhanger park, and also will give me an opportunity, of assigning some reasons for that opinion as I proceed. I have always considered it the duty of my profession to suggest no improvement, without some fair reason for adopting it, and every days experience convinces me, that altho' Landscape Gardening is often considered as more subject to fashion or caprice than any other Art, it is not less reducible to rule than Architecture, or Painting: since True Taste in all the Arts must be founded on reason and reflection.
