Butters, who was for many years superintendent of the men employed in manual roadwork in the County Surveyor's Department of the County Council. These photographs were taken, presumably by Mr Butters, when the new road was being laid out and built between Milton Ernest, Thurleigh Wind Tunnel, and Thurleigh Air Field; and the line of road from North End, Bletsoe (where the new road joined) to the A 6 at Sharnbrook Turn was being improved, October 1946 - May 1947 The first album contains twenty-seven photographs taken before, during and after various trenches for drainage were being dug; pipes laid and earthing up on completion. Photograph number 19 shows a clearing being made through Wigney Wood in December 1946 and there are good deep snow scenes taken in February, 1947 (nos. 20 - 25). The second album contains similar views, and includes a photograph of German prisoners of war clearing snow at Bourne End Cross Roads on 24th February, 1947. (no. 45). Number 46 is another view of the same area "after 28 degrees of frost", given as the same date. Contains nos. /28 - 58.
