  • Scope and Content
    - This small collection comprises printed material containing poems, hymns and other written work of Rev. Robert Atherton 1861-1930. Robert was born in Liverpool in 1861 and was Vicar of Bolnhurst in Bedfordshire between 1888-1904. Robert was a talented freelance poet who also wrote hymns and sonnets, after 1904 he moved to Manchester and earned a living of sorts selling copies of his poems. The Manchester Evening News provided the following press opinion on Robert under the heading, 'The Luck of a Lancashire Burns,'… 'He can give you any-thing from a musical comedy lyric to a Christmas hymn, and supply you with the music for the latter. He can rhyme you like Edgar Allan Poe, sing you like Clifton Bingham, pun you like Tom Hood, or tell you children's tales like Lewis Carroll'. [24th March 1908]. Robert signed his work under the following names: Robert Hesketh Banks, Robin O' Bobs and the 'Lancashire Burns'.
