  • Admin/biog history
Luton Fabian Society, a left-wing socialist society associated with the Labour Party, was formed in 1942 and disbanded in 1956. It reformed briefly c1967-1969 before lapsing once more. In 1991 a Luton and South Beds Fabian Society was formed, but it appears that this is also now defunct. Incidentally, a Bedford Fabian Society existed between 1944 and c1955. The local Bedfordshire societies did not last long; the problems of finance and declining levels of membership were major factors. The records of the national Fabian Society (est. 1884) are held by the LSE, Lionel Robbins Building, 10, Portugal Street, London WC2A 2HD. The current contact is Sue Donnelly. The records of local Fabian Societies are not, however, normally held by them. Potential depositors of material are referred to local archive offices.
