  • Title
Photograph of Bedford Midland Station, demolished 1978, taken by Mr Fred Cockman. Alfred Sizer in Bedford Junction box. He joined the LMS Railway at the age of 16 in 1931 as junior porter at Olney. Later he became foreman and transferred to the Signal & Telegraph Dept. In 1946 he was placed in charge of Turvey box and when the Northampton branch closed on 1 April 1962 he was promoted to Bedford Junction. This box will be demolished at the end of 1978 when the new electronic signal box at West Hampstead will control 70 miles of line. He started at 17/- a week and now takes a net sum £50 (with overtime) which is not great by today's standards having regard to his great responsibilities. Alfred Sizer lives at Clifton Reynes and is well known there as a champion fruit and vegetable grower and is also a bee keeper.
