Thornton of Woburn, draper Sam. Davis of Ampthill, gent. Seven of the trustees for amending the highway between Hockliffe and Woburn (40 Geo. III) (ii) Jn. Farey of Woburn, gent. Jas. Martin of Woburn, innholder Surveyors of the highways for Woburn Recites the Act of 1800 providing that a proportion of the tolls may be assigned to local surveyors; recites also that a Woburn vestry was held 20 July and 21 July last; and that the following inhabitants authorised the surveyors to agree with the trustees: R.A. Reddall, Geo. Rock, Jn. Circuit, Jn. Preston, overseer, Wm. Goodman, And. Gardiner, Hen. Rock, overseer, Jn. Parry, curate, Thos.Shaw, churchwarden, Edw. Handscomb, Jn. Gostelow, Jn. Thornton, Wm. Osborne, Ric. Camps, Thos. Lucas, Thos. Parker; (ii) Undertake to keep in repair for 20 yrs. such part of the London turnpike road as lies within the parish of Woburn; (i) Assign to them all statute duty and composition money; also 1/7 of the tolls from "the whole of the sd. turnpike road", and of penalties for overweight at Woburn gate, or any other offences, as far as Tickford bridge; after deducting tollkeepers' salaries, rent of tollhouses, salaries of surveyor, treasurer and clerk, interest on mortgages (not exceeding £2,500), together with £50 for discharging same; subject during the first year to £150 tolls for the period 29 Sept. to 25 March; the above to be expended on that part of the road in Battlesden called Hockliffe causeway; payment to be made quarterly; the trustees further appoint the Woburn parish surveyors their surveyors for the purpose of the act; they also agree that they will keep in repair "the weighing engine now erected at Woburn gate ... for accurately weighing of carriages ... in the engine house."
