    Conveyance to uses (The original of this deed is so frail that it has been necessary to make the entry from the Charity Commission's Reports and from the later copy X 196/3).; Tag for seal. (i) Thos. Johnson, cit. & mercht. tailor of London; (ii) The vicar and churchwardens of Lidlington; Sir Thos. Snagge of Marston, Edw. Duncombe, Wm. Duncombe of Lidlington, Geo. Johnston of Brogborough House, gent., Ric. Jones, gent., Wm. Archer, Josiah Chapman, John Hebbes, Humph. Hickman, John Parnham, and John Clerke of Lidlington, yeomen. -- £16 annually from a watermill and millhouse occ. Wm. Greene called Bells alias Bellows Mill, a little tenement or new house adjoining, and closes of 8 ac. in Eaton (Bray); for the following purposes:- (1) The trustees shall yearly appoint 4 godly and religious preachers of God's word to preach a sermon each year on the 4 several Sabbath days after Michaelmas, Christmas, Lady Day, and St. John's day; fee 6s.8d. each; (2) They shall appoint a poor scholar to teach 6 poor scholars born or residing in Lidlington to read, write and cast accounts; salary 4 marks annually; the scholars shall be provided with jerkins and breeches of grey frieze (the latter lined with leather), stockings of blue yarn and hats with watchet or blue bands "as they formerly have been"; schooling to terminate at the age of 16; (3) They shall provide annually 3 horsemen's coats of grey frieze lined with white cotton "as they formerly have been" and 3 hats for the 3 poorest and oldest men of painful and honest lives and sober conversation and such as frequent the church; to be given on St. Thomas' day; 3 other old men being so supplied in alternate years; (4) They shall similarly provide 3 old women with frieze gowns and hats; (5) They shall give 13 old men & 13 women 52s. annually (i.e. 1s. each on St. Thomas' Day and Good Friday. On the death of trustees 4 or more survivors shall appoint new trustees. Any surplus is to be paid to such of the before-mentioned persons as shall assist in a friendly meeting. Should the above trust not be complied with, the property will become vested in the incumbents and churchwardens of Lidlington, Ridgmont, Millbrook and Marston for distribution among their respective poor. see also P 11/78/2 p. 1 [Houghton Conquest]
