Title
Agreement by a number of owners and tenants of messuages and cottages in the hamlets of Hockliffe (sic), Tebworth and Wingfield in the parish of Chalgrave:-
To contribute to the costs, at Quarter Sessions or Assizes, of disputing whether Edw. Botsworth was legally made surveyor of the highways for the parish of Chalgrave for the current year, and of the prosecution or defence of any suit that shall be commenced against or at the suit of any of their number by or against Edw. Botsworth by reason of their refusal to pay rates for a road over Wingfield Heath, or any other road in Chalgrave; To refuse to compound individually with Edw. Botsworth Each signatory binds himself in the sum of £10 to keep the agreement. [Recites that at a vestry meeting of constables, surveyors, churchwardens and inhabitants of Chalgrave, Geo. Atterbury, gent., and Jeff. Peacock, yeoman, were nominated and chosen surveyors (there being never more than two in the sd. parish); their names were returned to the J.P.s at Special Sessions; who nominated Edw. Botsworth as an additional surveyor; Edw. Botsworth has spent several sums on the road over Wingfield Heath; and it is therefore intended to dispute the right of the J.P.s to nominate him.] Witn.
