Scope and Content
Thanks for letter; will meet him on Thursday.
Had been anxious to give up the business a few years ago when Dick was not well. Doctor said would not be answerable if she did "take such an active minded man as Dick out of business" - not want to put him in an Asylum. 2 men lately committed suicide from business worries shot still in brain and at back of the eye; man who shot him a rich man 'in my opinion he is a thorough cad'
Furniture, fittings belong to her + £4000 2nd Mortgage on his property £600 first mortgage [£1400 paid off last year) would not have needed Assignment if Dick's cousins had helped. Bank only owed £750-600 but securities £600 but want money as turnover not sufficient. Dick kept things from her too much. Writer wanted to discuss it all with Tom a year ago, did not do so because "you looked so ill and troubled with parting from Tom (ie T C Hipwell's son]. Lawyers say wife can claim against husband in Deed of Assignment but if she includes her claim would throw the matter in to Bankruptcy then her claim (£1500) at an end. Have lost £800 last two years and girls education expensive
Mortgages had to be paid off on old Thomas A's death (Attenborough?) Frank Hipwell and Arthur Bird proposed for Committee of Inspection. No extravagence and nothing dishonourable 'your kindness saved us from the step two years ago'
