    The Bedford Council of Social Service was formed in 1928 to - according to its constitution - 'promote the general good of the community in the Borough of Bedford and immediate vicinity thereof by assisting the work of statutory authorities and voluntary organizations engaged in advancing education, developing physical improvement, furthering health, relieving poverty, distress or sickness, or in pursuing any objects which are now or hereafter deemed by law to be charitable'. In 1960 the Guild House in Harpur Street opened as a day time club for the elderly (see Z 1136/1/3 pp.215-6) The organization changed its name several times in the 1970s: 1973 Bedford District Council of Social Service 1974 Bedford District Council for Voluntary Service 1975 North Bedfordshire Council for Volunteer Service 1976 North Bedfordshire Council for Voluntary Service In c1974? the Bedford Council of Social Service split into the North Beds Council for Voluntary Service and the Old Peoples' Welfare Committee. The latter later became North Beds Age Concern and, in 2002, Bedford Guild House
