Scope and Content
'The Romans in England once bore away,
And then the Saxons led the way
They tugged with the Danes for an overthrow,
But they all were beat by the Norman bow,
But barring all pother,
The one and the other
Were all of them kings in their turn.
First Billy the Conqueror long did reign
And Billy his son by an arrow was slain
And Harry the 1st was a scholar bright
But Stephen was forced for his crown to fight
Yet barring etc.
Second Henry Plantagenet's name did bear,
And Couer de Lion was his sin and heir
And magna Carta was signed by John
Which Henry the Third set his seal upon
Yet barring etc
There was Teddy the 1st was a tryer bold,
But the 2nd by rebels was bought and sold
And Teddy the 3rd was his subjects' pride
Tho' his grandson Dicky was popped aside
Yet barring etc
Henry the 4th was a warlike knight,
And Harry the 5th like a cock would fight
And Harry the 6th like a chick did pout
When Teddy his cousin had kicked him out
Yet barring etc.
Poor Teddy the 5th was killed in bed
By butchering Dick who was knocked on the head
And Harry the 7th in fame grew big
And Harry the 8th was as fat as a pig
Yet barring etc
With Teddy the 6th we had tranquil days
But Polly made Faggot and fire to blaze,
And good Queen Bess was a glorious dame,
And Bonnie King Jamie from Scotland came
Yet barring etc
Charley the 1st was a Martyr made
And Charley his son was a comical blade
But Jemmy to Protestants being contrary
Was forced to surrender to William and Mary
Yet barring etc
Queen Anne was Victorious by land and by sea
And Georgy the 1st did in glory sway
And as Georgy the 2nd has long time been dead
Long live the George we have in his stead
Yet barring etc. '
