Fragment of letter - undated Probably Mary Ann Strange at Stroud to Edward Halford Strange at Manchester c.1893 Not leaving her situation for 2 weeks - she is a rougher sort of girl than Lizzie and I am not at all sure that she will suit me very well - I hate the idea of a change in the house, but I shall be very thankful for some help - as the work is far too much for me as it is. My hands get into such a disgusting state that I can scarcely hold a needle. I shall hope to be somewhat settled by the time we have your much longed for company. I wish that you could have gone to Southport, and I think that you might have just said 'How much do you suppose the expense would be?' then you would have found out who had to 'pay the piper' . The change would have done you good I daresay, but money just now is a consideration - and you are a very good boy to bear this in mind. Thanks for 'Manchester Faces and Places', it is very interesting to us to read of the Hall and J K - he is a modest man and a very nice one too. The Rueggs are all bad - Florrie, Mrs and Alice in bed - Gertie doing for the lot. I don't know if the servant is ill or wily - so I have not been able to deliver the message re your moustache. I went to the Missionary Party to work this afternoon as I had promised to take my machine to help - but it was as much as I could do to spare the time I assure you - Wilfred got the tea and it was really a relief to get out of the house for a few hours. Mr Tyler came in here on Monday en route for Nailsworth where he is going to stay 2 weeks, he is very excitable, and laughed over small oddities so much that he made me feel quite hysterical myself to hear him - he says that if he finds himself better at Nailsworth he shall get a house and live there again! They say that he is very irritable, but of that I cannot speak of course - he stayed for an hour and a half and my dinner things etc waiting to be washed all the time! I meant to tell you weeks ago to buy yourself some
