From S S Halford to his children. 19 Sep 1882 My Dear Children, Thank you very much for your kindnesses for William also hope to see him in the course of the week, I am very sorry indeed that your new horse does not answer, it is a great loss to you. I went to the A Hall last Sunday to hear Mr Sawday, he had a large audience Mrs Thurstons 2 daughters came to the Hall to ask me to tea as Mr Sawday was coming but when the service was over he called me to him and said 'you must come with me to tea at Mrs T's', of course having two invitations I could not refuse. He asked very kindly after you and enquired how the Horse did. I walked with him to Chapel in the evening & had not been long in before I felt very poorly but shook it off as long as I could but before he had finished his sermon I was obliged to go out. He called to me from the pulpit to go in the Vestry but I wanted air. When I got out I soon got better. I have felt poorly now for several days. I quite intended to go to the Eagle on Thursday but have given up the idea of going fearing I should not be able to remain. Last week we had a Blue Ribbon Meeting at Vernon. I believe 50 signed the Pledge and more than 100 put on the ribbons. I was very pleased to see Mr Sawday put it on, also his wife. I am very sorry that they are on short time at beeks but hope it will not last. I hope Lucy has enjoyed her holiday but it is very clear that the best piece of furniture is away from the house although they seem to get on very well please give my love to her. The thought of winter approaching does not seem very cheering but if shared to its coming hope to have strength given me to bear the cold. Give lots of kisses to the dear children dear love and accept the same yourselves from your affectionate Father SS Halford. Love to Minnie. Farewell dear Children.
