Theodore Strange to Samuel May Strange 29 Mar 1868 Ipswich 29 March 1868 My dear Brother I don't know whether in my last to you, I asked for an answer by return of post, but having shown thy letter to Cousins, they wished me to write again to thee to ask for an answer by return. You don't recommend my emigrating by any means but I hope fancy when you read my last letter your views about emigrating will be somewhat modified. I believe that Canada at present offers better chances for emigration than the Western States, as the Country at large is in rather an unsettled state. Cousins A. wish me to stay say that if you Cannot make up your mind to give your consent to my going to Canada, they cannot see their way clear to help me forward at all. But I think you will alter your opinion when you see where I intend going &c. Before I came to Ipswich you were recommending me to go back to America, as the only means of getting a livelihood, now you seem rather set against my going out. I have fully made up my mind to go, Papa & Mary Ellen both favour it, especially as I have chosen Canada for my future home. Now is the time for going over, in fact if I could have been there now, I should stand the best chance of obtaining work. The climate is so much more salubrious than England, & in fact is ahead of the States on the take the climate on the whole. My reason for wishing for an answer by return is that the time is getting very short, that I have fixed for going, viz the 16th of April (next Thursday fortnight). I received a letter from Mary Ellen this morning, in which she states that she likes the idea of my going to Canada in preference to the States. We are having some pretty fair weather, warm at times. Last Monday we had a heavy hailstorm accompanied with heavy thunder & lightening. With love from Cousins & much from myself I remain Thy affectionate Brother Theodore Strange P.S. Remember there is no time to be lost if we really have determined on going forward with getting my outfit &c. &c. Mr Strange Postmark IPSWICH BRISTOL Wedmore & Co 29.3.1868 30.3.1868 Bristol.
