  • Title
Annie Scott to Mary Ellen Strange 8 Jul 1862 Wellington Rd Dear Miss May I just write a line to thank you for your kindness in sending me back my letters and especially for the little tract of dear Gertrude's; anything, however small which belonged to her is precious to me, and I prize it more for having been a favourite. The photographs were likenesses of L.M. & L.Sutton of Scotby who were at school with us at York. You must miss dear Gertie very much, but knowing as we do that she has entered upon all eternity of light and rest and joy, it is impossible to wish to recall her freed spirit to its earthly bonds for our sakes, though it is very hard to give up one so dear. I think I was never so happy in my life as I was during the first half year at York where dear G. was my dearest friend. I often wish now that I could remember more of her conversations; when we were in the nursery we used of course to see more of each other than in ordinary school life it is possible to do; one night we were talking about death and I said it would be very pleasant to die young and so escape more trial and temptation, and Gertie said, yes, she thought she would like it too, for some things, but if she had her choice she would rather live a good while and work for her Saviour, as she did so long to do something for Him. I little thought then how soon she would be called to His perfect service in Heaven. I must not say more now than that I am yours very sincerely Annie Scott.
