Gertrude Strange to Edward Harris Strange 24 Apr 1862 Tottenham April 24.62 My dear Papa, I had quite intended writing to thee to day had I not received thine this morning as I thought it doubtful how long thou would remain at Almeley - Many thanks for writing to me, particularly as it was not thy turn and thanks for the pretty flowers, & last not least for the beautiful gloves which fit me exactly and will be my tip top gloves all the Summer - I don't think I ever possessed such a fine pair before. I am very glad your sale was better than you expected, I hope thou takes the credit for keeping the animals in such good condition. We do not seem to hear of any occupation here though several enquiries have been made, but I hope now that thou really art without occupation that something may turn up if it is only a temporary employment - With regards to Ted - we see him pretty often and during my 6 weeks at Pear Tree Cottage I saw him more than every week as he came up several times & lodged.- Last Good Friday he came up here and when he got in he complained of headache which turned out to be a sick headache and he was obliged to give up and go to bed, the turn did not come till 7th day Evening (I wrote in the morning to say he would not go to Town) and then he got better very quickly - he lays it to his dinner on 5th day which he did not like as it was not nicely cooked and we think it must have been bad meat - He has never had such an attack as this before, and with this exception he has been in splendid health all through the winter; He seemed quite well on second day morning and went to town by the first omnibus - He seems to be getting on very comfortably I think - he is often at Holloway - I have a nice letter from M.E.- She is very busy preparing for the General Meeting which I believe comes off the latter end of this month - Sophy went yesterday to Birmingham on her way to Llandrindod - she writes word that Cousin Lizzie called at the Cadbury's where she is staying with the baby. Thou may not have heard that D. & E.Sims have a little boy who is now a fortnight-old. Aunt is down there and I don't much think she will come back for 3 weeks or so. Folk here seem pretty well - J. & L.A.Hine are staying here at present. The Wich Cross folks were very well: I went to the West-End with them on 3rd day and enjoyed it much: we went in the chaise and then walked about to several places they had to go to, going to see the new collection of Turner's paintings at the National Gallery by way of diversion; we made a good long day of it altogether. Naughty Papa - to think I am not well because I don't write. I am first rate as the saying is, and don't act the invalid much - thou must not think of me as thou saw me last Summer. We are just beginning house-cleaning and are poisoning the cockroaches with which we are overrun at "bed & board". I must not write more now as it is meeting time Farewell from thy loving Gertrude The enclosed likeness is a present from C.Hooper & Sophie, they wished to have me taken and there are very few copies of this, so that it is more valuable than the other I sent - I think if thou would send a line to C. she would appreciate it.
