Mary Ellen Strange to Edward Harris Strange 2 Jan 1850 Ackworth 1/2/1850 [M.E.S. to E.H.S.] Very dear Papa I am afraid that I have no very good reason for keeping such a long silence excepting that I have been learning to slide as it has been freezing for several days as yesterday morning was new years day we had a half holiday and I managed to fall down as I am not very apt at sliding and as I am rather stiff I do not think I shall trust myself again today. Last night evening as we were sitting in class we all at once heard a loud screeming [sic] in the dining room and we found that the mummers had been running after some girls who did not know at all who they were & were very much frightened at them. I want the days to get longer as fast as they can for it seems a very long time since I saw thee last at Wolverton Station. Wilt thou give send me a pair of warm mitts to play in. Please give my dear love to everybody at home accept a large share thyself & believe me as ever thy very affectionate Mary Ellen Strange Envelope: penny red Edward Strange WAKEFIELD AMPTHILL Ampthill 2.1.1850 Bedford.
