Edward Harris Strange to Priscilla Strange 12 Oct 1848 Ackworth 10/12/48 My dear P I have as thou wilt see actually arrived at this noted place, & from what I have been able to see of it by gas light it merits the fame it has so long acquired. I reached the Inn about 5 o'clock in an open carriage I procured from Wakefield as I did not like to wait 21/2 hours at Oakenshaw for a train to take me to Featherstone, & when there I must have walked to Ackworth after night as there are no conveyances kept. I proceeded to the School immediately on my arrival & I had not been in the "teachers" parlour many minutes before a healthy looking girl with a pair of sparkling eyes made her appearance - We soon walked over to the Inn & in that snug little parlour we had tea with an abundance of nice things in the shape of cakes &c. at about 1/2 past 7. I took her over to the school but the girls were reading & repeating in the different Schools so that we have to wait some time before we could find any one - our dear child seems in excellent health & & think very happy - she is to be with me tomorrow & is to shew me all about the place & the village - a few days is therefore much desired. If the weather is fine tomorrow I hope to see most of the place worth visiting & return on 7th day.- The accompanying cards I omitted to send last night, they will be useful to Bentley in sorting the Cheese which I suppose will be at Marston to day - With my very dear love P.S Thy very affectionate E.H.S.
