  • Title
Mary Ellen Strange to Priscilla Strange 4 Sept 1848 Ackworth school 9th moth Dear Mamma I am very much obliged to thee for the stamps but I have found my case at the very bottom of my box, under the paper, I was so glad to find it. All the new girls have been examined by the doctor to see if we were sound. Thomas Phumfrey [Pumphrey] has made all the girls who do not like to bathe, to be washed all over by E.Bins the mending mistress, I went on 4th day but I do not wish to go again I felt as if I was drowning so I must be washed. Will thee send me a sheet of lines as I cannot write even without them. There are eighteen new girls I think. My lessons take up most of my play time. Will thou send me a skein of light red and dark blue silk in thy next letter. Ann Hardy is in office and will be I believe till she goes. I do not like sewing afternoons because I have to make sheets and they are so hard and we are expected to seam a whole side. I shall most likely be monitor over the 6th class in a month or two. We have just been having our shoes & frocks changed I have such a nice school frock. We went such a nice walk on yesterday week. Ask papa not to forget me quite though I am so far off and come to see me. I hope Ann is pretty well is D.Grimes any better. With Dear love I remain thine M.E.Strange P.S. I am in the drawing class.
