Ann May to Harriet May 18 July 1846 Ampthill 7/18/46 My very dear Harriet, Altho' Eliza has written I incline to thank thee for thy kind note received this morning, & assure thee of my tender sympathy with your mournful company under the present affecting loss, to you all in degree, it will be felt as a calamity but especially to E.A.'s affectionate mother, yet it is evident from her own most comforting dying words, that she is forever centred where pain & grief are unknown. It now remains for survivors to profit by the solemn instruction which this unexpected event must convey to every reflecting mind - how are we prepared for the awful summons? are we awaiting it with our "Lamps trimmed" or trusting to others for help, tho' the danger of this is loudly proclaimed in every day's experience, but strikingly so when the young & blooming are suddenly arrested by the hand of death, of this we have a fresh instance at Leighton, John Bassett's eldest son Peter jun. & his second daughter Anna Maria died in the course of this week, & are to be interred to-morrow, it is rumoured that J.B. & his youngest daughter are both ill - I much approve of my dear sister & Emily changing the scene by going home, lest what they have gained in health & spirits should suffer by anxiety. Thy Grandpa' is but poorly, myself much as usual - rather the worse for walking out in the high wind of yesterday. My very dear love to thy parents brothers & sister with thanks to dear Margaret for her sweet present Thy very affectionate G.'ma Ann May.
