Ann May to Harriet May at Ipswich 25 April 1843 Ampthill 2nd Day My dear Harriet I have just time to give thee a line as short as that thou so kindly address'd to me but regret to add that, I am not furnished with the wherewithal to render it half so acceptable. Indeed the relief was inexpressible on hearing that our dear Margaret was safely arrived at home without much apparent fatigue, & very much did we feel oblig'd for such early information, do tell her that yesterday her aunt fully intended writing to her but was less agreeably employed with poor Mary Ellen in her lap most of the day, she has a singular eruption resembling small pox, & on my finding that Ruth the new housemaid had the same came out a day or two earlier, we sent for T.C. who gave it a finer name than we think it deserves (Roseola) - the child is very ill with it, has a great deal of fever, and wants constant nursing - thy aunt seems in danger of being overdone - so we have planned a long ride for her this afternoon with thy Uncle. We are to have an early dinner for me to go & take her office with Mary Ellen.- Last evening I called after meeting on our departing friend W.Morris, whose state has not varied much the last week - he wished to see me, being quite sensible, so I made another comforting farewell visit, he persevered in calmness & patience looking hopefully toward the messenger of release. Thy grandpa is gardening, his namesake trotting about - My new servant came on 7th day - - Ann & I have been taking Mary Ellen out in the basket wagon - she is feverish & very languid. I must attend to her - she says I am to give her love to cousin Margaret & all your circle - I may safely give ours unitedly - excuse an abrupt farewell & believe me to remain dearest H. Thy ever affectionate Grandma. Seal : green circle stuck on letter "M" Charles May Postmarks : F AMPTHILL IPSWICH Engineer 25 AP 25 AP26 Harriet. Ipswich. 1843 1843
