Title
Ann May to Priscilla Strange July 1842 Ampthill 1st day
My dear P.
As Edward is writing, why should I take the pen is a question with thy father as well it may be, considering the quiet way in which time has passed here while so much variety has fallen to thy lot - whether on land or water, be assumed our thoughts have followed thee & thy darlings, but how much you are missed I cannot say.
Thy kind letter written at Philpot was most relieving, I was glad you did not sail till 6th day having wish'd thee to see poor Jane, who has a strong claim on our sympathy & affection under the change of circumstances which must perplex her at every turn, while she aims at concealment & patient endurance in this I desire to imitate her; yet the subject weighs down my spirits it is a day & night sorrow, & at times hope less, as not likely to terminate until my dear F.'s health & spirits are broken down - he does not write to this effect, yet I know he is a stranger to any thing like repose or comfort, & his partners continue to treat him with that indifference which shews how completely they can & will neutralize all the good counsel of his sage advisers, but it is far from my wish to destroy thy pleasure in this way, rather would I enjoy with thee the dear & interesting society rendered more delightful by domestic comfort, & lovely weather, so that I hope you are enjoying the garden &c. in groups, as I view you in idea.
Very glad we were to receive Edward home, & trust we shall never repent his new purchase, they are grand creatures indeed, but he will mention them - thy father is on the sofa with his book, desires his love.
Brother & sister were both at meeting today, as was Richard Phillips, Susan Warner &c. In my daily visits to Ann all has appeared to be going well - very clean & orderly, & such a blank! & such a silence! in the absence of M.E.'s sweet voice.
With very dear love to her & her cousins, to dear C. & Nancy with thyself, I am
Thy ever affectionate Mother
