Ann May to Priscilla May 27 May 1842 Bishopsgate 3rd Day My dearest P. I am come this morning by an early Omni. with thy father with a view of going on to Bridge House Hotel to see Nancy who probably joined Charles there last evening, but the rain is come on so briskly that I have taken refuge here at James Bayes' lodgings & as the meetings do not open until eleven think I cannot employ the short interval better than by acknowledging thy kind note received yesterday it reached me in Broad St. where a number of us partook of a cold dinner & tea, there was no afternoon sitting for us but the larger committee at six allowed of general greetings & conversation - My sister Tuckett with Philip & Anna were there (no Henry) they all looked well - my brother & sister Arch the latter looking pale & thin - Hooper - Curtis's & Crowleys Foxs &c did not come quite in shoals. Charles & Emma half engaged us to go there on 1st day but I shall excuse myself. My heart dwells with the poor the every way depressed It will be very disappointing to thee when I say it is not in my power to throw any more light on dear F's prospects farther than from a little conversation with Charles who spent 1st day with us - he tried to encourage me by saying that until more is known by eliciting W.Bryant's feeling in the matter we need not view it so gloomily, as he considered if well managed F. may yet derive a good income from the business, stating the reverses they had encountered in Cowper St.- but altho' C. intended taking an early opportunity of sounding W.B. he is so pressed by business on every hand that I have not even seen him since - Francis and he as well as thy F. & Edward attend nearly all the sittings & Jane comes up today - I intend going to join my sisters again - must of course put on a cheerful face & conceal the "sackcloth underneath" - It is more than I could have expected to enjoy an occasional calm in meetings more especially while passing through this storm - You will hear more of Church Business than I can tell all goes on smoothly on our side of the house I hope safely. the Committee has two nice assistants to Susanna Corder - Christine Price & Sophia wife of John Pease - A number of epistles are to be brought in this morning few Testimonies so M.Forster suggested to me in the Omni. that our business would not last very long - For the present A.M. From Broad St. Going late to the Committee
