Joseph Strange to Edward Harris Strange 3 May 1837 Almeley May 3rd 1837 My dear Brother I have the satisfaction of informing you that box of eggs arrived perfectly safe & sound and in excellent preservation on Wednesday last, but the letter did not arrive till yesterday I have to return you our sincere thanks not forgetting your Amiable Priscilla for this, to our Mistress, invaluable present for whatever may be the extent of the future young "Poland Dorkings" (by the by I think a very appropriate term for them) I am sure our gratitude will know no bounds for your abundant kindness in selecting & sending such a rellieable [sic] breed of feathered Tribe, I have the very great satisfaction to state that three of the most confidential nurses of the Grainiferous Tribe are now engaged in very responsible task of incubation - Mary has undertook to report from time to time how the important work goes on & so that after a few weeks you may expect a regular file of papers " When the Pauts [pullets?] begin to cry" Benjamin & Sarah desire me to return to you their sincere thanks for the valuable present to their little maids. I saw William Strange on Sunday last I whent over to Cotmore for that purpose he has not altogether relinquished the Idea of visiting the Metropolis but cannot fix any definite period, 13 May the time for changing servants is arrived cant possibly come till after that time, Then Sweedish Turnips must be sowed!! by that time the end of May will be here, and it is doubtful if something else will not be wanting after that time, so it doubtful if he comes at all, yet he says he will but I don't hardly believe him, With regards to his mare I have to state that he sold her at Hereford Easter Fair for I think 20 Was you in earnest in your last letter you talked of William Strange purchasing a horse for you and riding him up to your place? William tells me that he still intends coming about the end of May and so be you are inclined to trust him with the buying of steed and riding him you must give more explicit instructions on the subject, you will to state in the first place what Price you would like to give for one and 2nd the couler [sic] you would have &c. his height, girth strength of Bone all these things must be stated specifically or otherwise we shall not know what sort of a beast to purchase &c. I am sorry to say that Mother is very poorly with Rumatic [sic] affections in her limbs otherwise her bodily health is pretty good. Mary & Myself are tolerably well, Benjamin & Family are all well. With love to all your family and remain your affectionate Brother Joseph Strange May & Strange Ampthill For E.H.Strange Beds
