Lucy How to Priscilla Strange re H. Smith 1837 [Aspley] 2nd day My dear Friend I write & send thee a line to say to say that I am quite pleased with the appearance of Harriet Smith and have concluded to engage her, provided thou wilt be so kind as to inform me if the young man with whom she is acquainted, be thoroughly respectable and suitable to be allowed to visit her occasionally here - It seems uncertain whether her mistress will part from her till a month from this time & I hope she will be allowed to leave sooner as our present servant wishes to go to London next 6th day & I shall find it very inconvenient to wait so long - Perhaps thou wilt send me a line &c. from tomorrow to say when she will be at liberty - & may I trouble thee to mention whether Harriet is cleanly in her work, cookery &c. We feel much obliged for the trouble thou hast had in this affair. It will give me great pleasure to see thee here I hope ere long - Thou wilt ride over & give us a look - We are truly glad to hear of thy father & Mother's health being improved - My W.Y.H. unites in love to them & thyself with thy affectionate friend Lucy How If thou canst intercede with Harriet's mistress to part with her soon it will greatly oblige us - Excuse great haste - Priscilla Strange Ampthill.
