My dear Brother
It is some four or five months since we received anything from you or your amiable Mistress I think it absolutely indispensable to write a few lines in order to make a few necessary enquiries on the subject.
Are you & your Priscilla in the land of the living or not? Has some severe Frost taken hold of your finger ends? or has the inclement snow engulfed you under one of its tremendous avalanches? or (which is more probable) business been so pressing that you could not find ten minutes to write me all this winter. I shall expect an answer to all these queries immediately on receipt of this long yarn of mine
We have very little Snow this winter in this neighbourhood, not more than an inch deep about ten days of sharpish frost &c.
I am sorry to inform you that our dear Mother has been very unwell nearly all the winter, she has been troubled with a violent rheumatic pain in the head, & neck and hands so that she could scarcely walk across the house without the most excruciating pain, the weather has been so changeable of late and so exceedingly wet & cold that she has been a very great sufferer indeed from this painfully rheumatic complaint, I think she was first attacked about the week following hop picking and at times better, and sometimes worse ever since but I hope if the whether were to get a little more favourable she would be able to get over it.
Inclosed you will find a Hare, Turkey, & Chine, all of first rate quality, of which we beg your acceptance -
William Strange has I believe made up his mind to pay you a visit about the end of May, provided his most pressing business does not interfere with the projected schemes
I had a letter from Jonathan a few days ago - he was very well at that time, thinks his Farm will answer his expectation very well - I saw Benjamin & Family yesterday were all well.
We are going on in the old jog trot of a way at the Bridge no alteration in our mode of procedure at present, I have not heard anything of my old opponent Watkins since you were here, I understand he is threatening loudly - write to me by return of post if your pen & ink are not altogether frozen up - With dear love to all Friends - and accept the same for Yourself
from Your ever Affectionate Brother Joseph Strange.
