Caroline May to Priscilla May 29 Jan 1834 Tottenham 4th day 29th My dear sister, I am sorry to be so limited in time as I am this morning in replying to thy last acceptable communication but thou wilt think yesterday was fully occupied when I tell thee that I went up to town to attend the funeral of poor Christian Philips in the morning & on my return to dinner found a party of nephews & nieces consisting of R & B Winstone, E {Snead} & Matilda Hooper which with dear Louisa & Caroline H. & my flock &c. formed a large youthful group all but Edmund & Richard staying the night - a double knock! - I again resume my pen in haste - Edward was prevented joining the morning company yesterday by the arrival of Rachel Fox's son so that while he was rejoicing with one party I & (he too mentally) was sorrowing with another yet for it is affecting to see a family in their youthful days deprived of both their natural guardian & director but I could not sorrow at the removal of their beloved mother in present circumstances so much does it appear a dispensation of mercy she has been evidently declining for some time & it would have been very trying to have taken her to a new & distant home as they were contemplating - D.Wheeler much this morning hoping that this change in the wind may be bearing him out into the wide ocean in the prosecution of his gospel errand. I was not surprised at thy allusion knowing what various feelings & conjectures have been raised on the subject of his separation from C.W. in which both partners are much to be felt for but I think we may all be satisfied when we find that C.W. himself has said in writing that "he believes their separation was in the ordering of best wisdom" both seem to be united in this feeling therefore we may conclude it was not right they should proceed together - C.W. writes very affectionately to D.W. but there is an inconsistency in some of the accounts that cannot be reconciled - May my dear P in this day of unsettlement rest satisfied with nothing short of earnestly seeking for ourselves an interest in Him who has promised that the Comforter which should be sent by Him should lead us into all truth - his promises are unfailing but we must seek & pray for their fulfilment - M.Horne has just been sitting here a good while & enquired kindly after thee & our relatives - The post has brought a relieving letter from Ampthill respecting Father who has thou hast perhaps heard has been very poorly since first day but it seems as the attack would pass off favourably - we feel pretty much at ease & thou mayst too unless thou hears to the contrary - We enjoy having L & C H but the former will write for herself & send her sister something more worth having than this scrawl from Thy affectionate Sister C.May Edward's & my dear love to your Circle. P.May Frenchay.
