Edward Curtis May to Ann and Samuel May 29 April 1833 Tottenham 4 mo 29. 1833 My dear Parents It's nearly twelve o'clock & I am almost overdone but I cannot refrain from telling you of the arrival of your grand daughter Anna Maria May which took place this evening at 8 o'clock - Caroline was so ill from the Influenza & its attendant cough that she was well nigh shaken to pieces yesterday week & for this event we sent to get Rachel in readiness but thanks to an {hour?} or two and plenty of rest this was arrested & she has {held} on eight days longer - we do esteem it a great blessing to have her so comfortable as she is now & I trust she will be stronger ere long than she has been for some time. The youngster looks dark & at first I thought she resembled Eliza in beauty, but we have since discovered that she is more like the our little impudent Soph - I do not intend to enlarge much for my back aches from sheer fatigue - We never had such a busy time before as the present, as you will believe when I say that I have several times seen of late from 80 to 90 patients per day - you will be sorry to learn that poor E.Hodgkin died yesterday from the effects of Influenza on a shattered constitution - her end was calm & peaceful - but I must tell you more of this & many other things when we meet - By the bye we want to know what F. looks like - he has been I believe 4 times to Town without coming here What can be the reason of it? How do you escape this all pervading malady - 12 out of our 13 have had it - my attack did not prevent my seeing double my usual number of patients altho I could hardly say anything - I must say adieu with dearest love to your whole circle I am your ever affectionate son E.C.May Tell Nancy the Dr improves.
