To the Budget [a budget is a bundle] Emily Hooper To what shall I now tune my lyre To what shall I now turn my lays In mingling with poetic fire I'll sing unto the Budgets praise Tis sweet when evening's curtain's drawn And when the sun has hid his face When all without is dark & 'lorn And night is drawing on apace When within another scene Presents itself unto the eye Resembling more a calm serene Than a thick and clouded sky And whilst I touch my tuneful lyre I'll say 'tis sweet when day is fled To sit around the schoolroom fire And hear the budget's contents read To thee O Budget much we owe For many a piece in thee we find For which our gratitude should flow Of taste and art combined And although I must confess It was not my design Unto this tasteful nosegay To mingle ought of mine Yet still I feel a wish come o'er That I cannot expel Unto the Budget's power My love to all may tell And now dear friends one thing I beg Not having any to revise You will not closely look herein Nor yet too keenly criticise
