Ann May to Priscilla May early Oct.1826 Ampthill 2nd Day Morning My dear P. As this my humble present is so long in coming possibly thou may'st have furnished thyself with a pair if so pass them on where wanted - Thy F. & G.Beck are just gone to M.M. at Baldock. I have given up my seat in the chaise from feeling unusually indisposed & the morning being rainy Nancy is gone in the gig with J.Bennell jun. I dare say thou wonder's what I shall do with such a Strange addition to our family truly it feels so to me & scarcely seems like being at home the youth of that name keeps thy bed aired & our gentleman Dawson the spare one as we could not think of mixing them up with anything belonging to us but I hope to get reconciled to the sighs of E.Strange who seems quite in the simplicity & hope the other will favour us with only a short tarriance - Do entreat Francis not to engage any but a friend for a continuance, it is so very annoying, tell him with my dearest love to his wholeself that I have not a letter of theirs by me to answer, yet do not forget to take a most affectionate interest in them & their concerns - thou art probably with them still, it affords me pleasure to believe you are all enjoying the society of each other, yet excuse me my dear if I just remark, that the reason given for thy deferring a finish to thy visit to Kennington appeared to me one that should have operated in favor of going forthwith, in order, during the servant's illness, to make thyself useful to thy aunt, it might indeed have proved a present inconvenience to thee, but might have yielded more solid satisfaction than studying thy own gratification, am hoping soon to be favor'd with another of thy nice scribbles, the longer the better - J.Wise seems better, he is still at some {uncertainty} about the house (late Rudd's) - Maria Morris is at Hertford, intends leaving as soon as Hannah has taken her bed - we hear Joseph is much better -- There are 12 Subs to the Book Society - Edmund Fry returned home on 6th day after seeming to enjoy his visit - M.A.Tatham left Charles's yesterday - with dearest love I am -- Thy ever affectionate Mother P.May.
