Ann May to Priscilla May May/June 1826 Bishopsgate 3rd day Dearest P. Having allowed R.Ransome to occupy the other half sheet I must abridge my sentences. With deep concern we have received the accounts of poor Robert's relapse, I am now in expectation every moment of Henry G's return, from the Peacock, where he went to receive a letter which we hope may confirm the news conveyed by this morning's post from which we derived great encouragement though his situation was evidently critical, but as the disorder had yielded so much to the means possibly by this time there may be a great amendment, we should be truly thankful to hear that was the case - Henry being now returned without a letter by the Bedford Coach we augur favourably concluding also that you think we may be satisfied with having an improved account by post had it not been for receiving that, Henry & I were prepared to go by the Bedford Coach to-day whereas we now wait for the next bulletin we may surely expect a letter by tomorrow's post unless R.Giles should come in the interim.- Our journey on first day was a very pleasant one we dined at D.Pearman's got to Tottenham when they were at tea & had the company of Rachel & her mother also Emily H. who is on a visit there. Elizabeth Bevington & Sister were also there glad of a lift in the chaise to their brother's. As thy F. left me at Tottenham Francis & W.H. were at J.Coleby's & went by coach. - 2nd day after dinner thy F. brought the sad tidings from you, & I soon took my leave of T. with him grieved indeed on poor R's account - So many friends have called upon us to-day that it brings me almost to post-time. Sarah Mackey has taken tea here came to enquire for Nancy desires her love, cousin M.Foster is here , Emma & Elizabeth Curtis have looked in too we intend asking them whether Harry could go to his old post behind our counter for a few months if J.Wise approve pray let us know as it must be long before Robert can be useful again. We wish to have sent by waggon on 5th day a ham for Francis such as we lost, & from 20 to 30lb of good butter. I walked to Cornhill this morning with my sister Arch. Philip T breakfasted here & Alfred comes tomorrow - Thy F's tooth brush & eye water also my comb may be sent unless my summons comes which thou wilt understand my dear depends on how your patient goes on & whether thy aunt & Nancy think it most prudent for me to be at home quickly, pray make no scruple of saying so thy F. also holds himself in readiness to return if J.Wise wishes it. Nancy may like to hear that a certificate is preparing for G. & A.Jones - Thy uncle Hooper has just called - Our dear Jane is not very well which makes me hesitate more about leaving - - I am to say that more butter should be sent on 6th day Rhubarb & Cress &c. if it can be spared. With much love to all in haste - R.Ransome is gone to sister Holmes to meet Elizabeth Broadbank & her daughter Hannah.
