Ann May to Priscilla 30 Sept 1824 Ampthill 9th Mo 30th My dearest P. Thy father having, as is often the case, rather suddenly concluded to go to town, I have endeavoured to collect some of the many things wanted to send to thee, but as a band box only is to go, such heavy things as the work box &c must remain, {but} it is likely there will soon be an opportunity - as Susan Burge is going up, soon and I hope to send them by her, believing Francis will not object to letting her lodge one night with Ann When the bonnet sent wants new lining & strings let me know, perhaps thy aunt [Debby May] can do it - I think it best to send thy old high shoes, to put on while the others are cleaned, hope thou wilt make great use of the cork soled ones in wet weather, and perhaps I had better furnish thee with black stockings & a black stuff skirt; thy old brown one needs mending & the frock washing - I miss thee very much, Lewis must now be my walking companion as he can now walk so strong. I am often longing to know how you are getting on with thy head do send me word all about it and whether thou passes the time agreeably - Thy father's visit will be a very hasty one, but hope thou wilt find time to scribble a little - say whether the tar is very offensive also if S Holmes visits thee often - thou wilt be glad to find thy Aunt Arch's visit here is commenced as it is drawing her nearer home. R Marsh brought us an excellent account of dear Samuel he was depending so on receiving a birthday cake that we sent one that would be two days too late yet I do not expect to see it coming back again Thou would surely wonder that I did not send a letter to thee by R Marsh but there was not time - A large party of us supped at Charles' on 2nd day evening - W Morris' family, Alfred Tuckett &c the latter comes from a visit to Leighton to morrow - We had both parlours full on Monthly M. day J & Ann Ransom came on first day - We have a grand invitation to J Morris's to morrow with C. & Nancy to meet S.Ashby & her three agreeable looking daughters.Thy Father will not take the trouble of a bird cage I will try to send it by Susan but think it must be the smallest cage say which bird- Past Bed time in haste with love to my dear Francis, (I hope you try to please each other) Thy ever affectionate Mother - My love to H.G. Priscilla May
