  • Title
    Letters from Private 42041 Richard Dillingham of Flitwick to his wife Christine Dillingham and his two children George William (known as Ben) and Richard. He enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps Balloon Section in June 1916. In November 1917 when as part of the 7th Lincolnshire Regiment he was killed along with 55,000 other soldiers in the defence of Ypres Salient. It is thought that he was badly wounded and was being carried away on a stretcher amid terrible bombardment. A direct hit by a shell is believed to have killed them all. They are mainly pencilled letters all over-written in biro much later and all are photocopies of the originals, by Richard Dillingham the son of the deceased.
