Title
Copies correspondence between John Greene, solicitor, Ampthill, and the Sec. to the Charity Commissioners.
The Widows Charity Land (a close) was leased by the churchwardens and overseers in 1860 to Wm.Franklin for 10 years at 25 p.a., with the kilns and buildings upon it. The clay is brought from land adjoining, not from the charity land. The lessee carries on a "very extensive trade" and has erected in addition "2 hovel buildings pantiled and standing upon posts, the sides are composed of reeds and strips of wood to keep them up, and used as drying hovels for the articles he manufactures". Greene asks for, and obtains, the consent of the Charity Commissioners to the removal of these by the lessee at the conclusion of the lease.
