    Whitbread (London) Limited This company bought out Flittons Brewery Limited in 1948 [see WB/Flitt] and Flowers Breweries Limited in 1962 [see WB/Flow]. Its origins were in the partnership of Samuel Whitbread of Cardington with Godfrey and Thomas Shewell in two breweries in Old Street, London in 1742, building another brewery at Chiswell Street, London in 1750. Godfrey Shewell withdrew from the partnership in 1749 and Thomas retired in 1762, Samuel Whitbread becoming sole proprietor. John Martineau's Brewery of Chelsea was acquired in 1812 and later The Anchor Brewery of Lewisham [Kent] and the Bell Brewery of Tottenham. The Forest Hill Brewery of South London was acquired in 1923 and the Sheffield [Yorkshire] brewery of Tennant Brothers in 1961
