    John William Green first entered business by buying the Phoenix Brewery from Henry & Frederick Pearman in 1869 [see WB/P]. He later acquired Wadsworth & Thaire's brewery in Market Hill, Luton and, in 1897, purchased Thomas Sworder & Company [see WB/S]. The business became a limited company as J.W.Green Limited on 7 Sep 1897 following the purchase of Thomas Sworder & Company. J.W.Green took over Glover & Sons Limited of Harpenden [Hertfordshire] in 1919, W.& S.Lucas Limited of Hitchin [Hertfordshire] in 1923 and Morris & Company (Ampthill) Limited in 1926 [see WB/M] and Adey & White Limited of St.Albans [Hertfordshire] in 1936 [see WB/AW], the following businesses being taken over after World War Two: E.& H.Kelsey Limited of Tunbridge Wells [Kent] in 1948; J.& J.E.Phillips Limited of Royston [Hertfordshire] in 1949; George Ware & Sons Limited of Frant [Sussex] in 1950; Soulby, Sons & Winch Limited of Alford [Lincolnshire] in 1951; Mowbray & Company Limited of Grantham [Lincolnshire] in 1952; E.K.& H.Fordham Limited of Ashwell [Hertfordshire] in 1952 J.W.Green Limited merged with Flowers Breweries Limited in 1954 [see WB/Flow] and, although the major partner, retained the Flowers name.
