Archival history
The original deposit comprised many of the papers in the files in Bishop Hare's study at 168 Kimbolton Road, Bedford, at the time of his death on 25 October 1976. In the preliminary rough sorting, all agendas, minutes etc., of the various diocesan organisations were retained.
The collection was finally catalogued in the summer of 1986, having been put into order by Miss Eve Cottingham, who worked as a Voluntary Helper at the County Record Office in 1983. At this point it was decided that there was no need to keep the official administrative papers, minutes and agendas and reports, as in due course the official files will go to the St Albans Diocesan Record Office and the Hertfordshire Record Office.
We have therefore retained only those official papers which relate to subjects in which Bishop Hare had a particular interest, and about which he left letters or memoranda. We have kept also papers which give information of a particular Bedfordshire interest.
