Statutory declaration by Thomas Percy George, Eaton Bray, surveyor, and Jesse Gadsden Thorn, Bedford Hotel, Queens Road, Hastings, Sussex, licensed victualler.
T P George says that he has resided at Eaton Bray since December 1882 and is the lessor and collector of taxes for the Parish, having succeeded to the post in 1905 on death of father Thomas George who had held the position for 20 years
He has in his possession the Parish Rate Book for 1882. A Poor Rate was made on 9 May 1882 and a piece of land containing 3 rod 11 perch in Bower Lane was rated and described as occupied by Jabez Thorn. Said piece of land was numbered 86 in Inclosure Award and allotted to William Dobson
Same allotment appears under assessment no. 416 in Valuation List for the Parish dated 31 December 1891, as being then occupied and owned by Jebez Thorn
That such land appears by subsequent rate books to be occupied and owned by Jabez Thorn up to his death in 1895. Can confirm this from his own knowledge
After his death the name of Jesse Gadsden Thorn was substituted in the books as the owner of plot 86. Is still in his ownership but is in occupation of Joseph Janes
J G Thorn says that his father, Jabez Thorn made his will dated 13 July 1895 by which he devised to him all his property. He died on 2 September 1895
At the time of his death his father was owner of plot no. 86 and by deed of 14 October 1890 he mortgaged it to Sarah Cotchin, together with plot no. 79, to secure repayment of 300 and interest. Money repaid on 15 January 1895 but no reconveyance made
By deed of 21 November 1895 made between Sarah Cotchin and himself said allotments numbered 86 and 79 were reconveyed to him by Sarah Cotchin
Since the death of his father he been in undisturbed possession of no. 86 and in receipt of rents of the same
