Gray agst. Brandreth. Answers to interrogatories.
Daniel Beaumont, Hyde St., St. Geo. Bloomsbury, esq., aged 46. He
belonged to the Duke of Bedford's office. He knew Mrs. Mary
Brandreth at the end of her life when she was lodging at the house of
Mr. Joseph Harrington in Great Russell St., Bloomsbury. At the time
of the last election M.P. for Westminster, Joseph Harrington came to
him on the hustings at Covent Garden to show letter from Mrs. Bray,
M.B.'s dau., sent to the office at Bedford House. Harrington is
agent for part of the Duke of Bedford's estate. Deponent made out
the codicil and next day took it upstairs for M.B.'s approval. Fair copy read over
to testatrix and signed, witnesses Godfrey Offty, Thos. Oldham
Chinner, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Bray.
Godfrey Offty, Gt. Russell St., apothecary, aged 62. He attended decd.
woman as apothecary for upwards of 20 yrs. before her death in
June 1784. Is still apothecary to Mary Bray and family. Until
death of Mrs. Buckeridge about a year before her own, Mary Brandreth
was dependent for her income on an annuity paid by her son, which
Offty understood was a cause of anxiety as it was paid rather
remissly.
Thomas Oldham Chinner, Peter St., Bloomsbury, plumber, aged 49. Had
become acquainted with decd. on his marriage to present wife
who was a close friend of M.B.
Magdalen Johnson, Plumbtree St., St Giles in the Fields, widow, 59,
companion to deceased. Had lived with her for upwards of 3 years
before her death. M.B. had made a codicil leaving legacies to
grandchildren in sterling, but it was explained to her that in this
case little or nothing would remain for her daughter, and so as she
wished to leave her daughter a handsome legacy, she decided to
change the legacies to her grandchildren into stock.
Joseph Harrington, Great Russell St., aged 43. M.B. had lodged
in his house for 5 years before her death, and he had known her for
20 years or more.
