Sale catalogue of Haynes Park Estate - agents: Savills International, 21 Horse Fair, Banbury [Oxfordshire]; - description: "The Park at Haynes or Hawnes as it was known has been in existence since at least 1312. During the Middle Ages it was held from the King by the Beauchamps, Mowbrays and Brays in succession, when the latter sold it in Elizabeth I's reign to the Newdigates. The property was passed through the family until 1622 when the Estate was sold to Sir Oliver Luke, then passing through the Winches to Sir George Carteret in 1667. His grandson was elevated to the peerage under the title of Baron Cartaret of Hawnes in 1681. Thereafter the manor passed through various branches of the family, passing to the ownership of the Marquis of Bath (owner of Longleat House). The title became extinct upon the death of John Thynne, third Lord Cartaret who had inherited the Estate in 1838. At that time the manor was inhabited by the Reverend Lord John Thynne and then by his second son Francis John before being sold to H.P.Saunderson on 9th January 1918, after a four year military occupation. The property became a school in 1929 before being sold again in 1975 to form Clarendon School. The Haynes Park Estate is based around a Grade I listed mansion which underwent comprehensive restructuring during the 18th and 19th Centuries. The existing western elevation was constructed circa 1725 for Lord Carteret, probably by Thomas Ripley. the south elevation is circa 1785 to 1790 for Henry Thynne, Baron Carteret, probably by James Lewis. The eastern elevation was completed circa 1849 to 1850 for the Reverend Lord John Thynne. The western elevation is constructed or red brick with a later white brick parapet. The south and east elevations are white brick with ashlar dressings. To the north of the original mansion are more modern buildings adapted from stables and coach houses being constructed of red brick.
