Contents vary depending on date but include: from 1883 onwards - details of mayor, deputy mayor, aldermen, councillors, returning officers, auditors, officials of the borough and urban sanitary authority, committees of the council, council meetings; from 1885 onwards - standing orders of the council; from 1887 onwards - exemption from jury service, borough magistracy, overseers, statistics e.g. population, houses, death rate, governors of Harpur Trust and St John's Trust, borough police scale of pay, almanack and diary; from 1888 onwards - list of mayors of the borough from 1250, MPs for the borough from 1294; from 1889 onwards - burial board, house of Industry, freemen of the borough, Bedford Gas Light Company, representatives of the borough on the Bedfordshire County Council, volunteer fire brigade; from 1895 onwards - lists of High Sheriffs of Bedfordshire from 1155; from 1897 onwards - memorable local events, byelaws, charities belonging to the council, waterworks, public buildings, swimming baths, barge, bill posting and town crier, cab fares, cattle market, tolls of markets and fairs, weights and measures, school board, committee for elementary schools debts and rates; from 1898 onwards - borough charters, armorial bearings, seal and insignia, schedule of corporation estates, loans, district fund, rates, polling districts, corporation electricity works, Bedford Union, isolation hospitals, museum; from 1914 - Institute and free library; from 1924 - local acts of parliament. During the First and Second World War periods up to 1950 the historical information was removed to save paper. After the local government reorganisation of 1974 much of the historical 'Borough' information is removed.
