INTRODUCTION
Three series of photographs were received from North Bedfordshire Borough Council Department of Planning and Amenities in 1989. Any further provenance is unknown but the following observations may be made:
BorB/PH 1
This is a series of photographs of shop fronts and/or signs in Bedford and was probably taken at the same time as the series taken by Kempston Urban District Council and Luton Rural District Council (see PLPH 1 and PLPH 2) as part of an initiative to reduce the increasing prevalence of unauthorised advertising signs in those councils' areas. The series has not been weeded and has been catalogued in the original order as identified by numbers marked on the back of the photograph. This number is given in square brackets at the end of each catalogue entry.
BorB/PH 2
These were obviously taken in conjunction with a planning appeal by the Dry Halasz Dixon Partnership in the Shakespeare Road area of Bedford. Unfortunately the relevant planning appeal files have not been lodged with the County Record Office and nor have the North Bedfordshire Borough Council minutes for 1975 (the year of the appeal as is evident from the application number: APP/5122/A/75/3941). The series is unweeded and catalogued in its original order, as discerned by the running number on the back of the photograph.
BorB/PH 3
This is a large series of negatives. The subjects are largely commercial premises in Bedford, though some private houses and a few locations outside the town are also included. It is possible that this, too, was a series connected with some sort of advertising survey though in the absence of other information this is merely a guess. The series has not been weeded and negatives have been catalogued in their original order as identified by a running number on each envelope.
These series are an excellent record of Bedford in the 1960s and 1970s.
