Scope and Content
Nice to see Bessie, sorry Minnie didn’t meet her there. Minnie came the following Monday ‘it was our monthly wash and so you will understand that we were ironing etc. Lizzie Pratt was keeping house for her which made it possible for her to leave. We had a long letter from Ernest he is moved…he seems to be in a very outlandish place, but he certainly writes more letters home than he ever did in London, and some very well. I hope Joey is now much better and all the others well…’ Wonders how Bessie getting on now her maid is gone. Confirmation at Tring same day as Willie’s ‘I suppose you had Dr Jacobs, I always liked him & always think Dad was mistaken about him, but it was useless to try to convince him.’ Lady Louisa Smith has been living at Bank House. George Jeffs and Joe Saunders ill. ‘We have not heard anything further about the application for Ernest for farm work…he often thinks he could be of more use at home. The field that they have ploughed up at the Folly is now planted with oats, also the other field there, now we have 8 acres to plant at Astrope, that was ploughed at Michaelmas and our garden perhaps will be planted someday but its almost a Wilderness. We had Mrs Pigott, Miss Walker and Girlie to tea last week they are very nice and they really do a lot of things. Mrs P shoots rabbits or rats, rides and digs the garden & Miss Walker too, they groom the horse & clean trap go to any thing such as Whist drive dances etc. She is with Mr Sunden food controller, has to distribute cards etc. How is Janie getting on. I hear the Howes are gone to Wingrave live, in Mr Newman’s house, a nice house but hardly what I should have thought enough for them but I suppose its near to Mrs Frank Griffin. If George comes he must go over to see George Pratt one day. I am rather afraid he will be missing Rowland, but I think G Pratt is improving a bit or his mother would not have left him, he has some quite nice thoughts as George says. Love to all from Grandma’
