  • Admin/biog history
George Slater was a publican in Box End, Kempston in 1911. He and his wife, Sarah, had living at home at that time six children: Mabel (b.1887), Maud (b.1888), a dressmaker, Frederick (bc. 1891) a domestic groom, John (b.1894), a housepainter, Edgar (b.1898) and Arthur (b.1902). John Robert Slater married Ellen E B Hannat on the 13th of March 1926 at Kempston parish church. Although on the marriage register Miss Hannant signs her name Ellen Ethel Benton Hannant it appears that she was sometimes known as Ethel. She was born in Hevingham, Norfolk, on the 5th of April 1894, the daughter of Elizabeth Benton and christened as Ellen Ethel. In 1897 Elizabeth Benton married William Hannant and on the 1901census Ellen appears as Ethel Ellen Hannant. By 1911 Ellen, still appearing as Ethel Ellen Hannant, is a servant to the vicar at Hevingham. It is believed that she remained in service until her marriage to John Slater. John and his wife had a daughter, Jill E Slater, born 1930. John died in 1955 and Ellen on the 13th February 1979. Mabel Slater married Arthur Brooks in 1922. Maud married George E Church in 1912 and they had a son Norman in 1916. Edgar married Phyllis L Pateman in 1917 and had a child Vera Phyllis in 1918. Vera married Austin Swift in 1939 and their daughter, Diana, married Michael Angel in 1970. It is believed that the documents here relate principally to these people and their immediate connection.
  • Archival history
The papers were gifted to Bedford Central Library with the authority for them to be passed onto the archives. The depositor was unrelated to the family and could explain little of the archival history other than he was sorting out some papers and had no reason to keep these.
