    [formerly known as the Council for the Protection of Rural England] The inaugural meeting of the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) Bedfordshire branch took place in 1987 in Maulden. 30 people attended this meeting, presided over by David Astor, the National CPRE Chairman. The first chair of CPRE Bedfordshire was Michael Brook, who died in 2023. District groups emerged following the formation of the County Branch. Mid Bedfordshire District Group formed in 1993 and North Bedfordshire District Group formed in 1994.
